Rancho Castro Adobe Potter Church Garden Restoration Update!
Thanks to the support of our donors, supporters, State Parks staff members, our board and committee members and our dedicated team of experts, the Rancho San Andres Castro Adobe Potter Church Garden is in the final stages of restoration.
Before:
Work in Progress:
Stay tuned for "After" photos!
Located to the west side of the adobe, the Potter-Church Garden was constructed from 1968-1972, when the property was owned by David and Elizabeth Potter. The Potters were close friends with renowned landscape architect Thomas Church, who consulted on the design of the garden and provided on-site sketches. Church is significant as the founder of the modern movement in landscape architecture known as the “California Style.” He completed master planning for UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz and Parkmerced in San Francisco, as well as countless residential designs. The garden provides a central gathering place for group tours and special events.
Thanks to the great work of landscape contractor Laura Livingston and her crew, and landscape architect Pam-Anela Messenger, the restoration is nearly complete. Stay tuned for information on upcoming events in the beautiful new garden.

PORTS program bring State Parks and Beaches into the Classroom!
We are proud to announce that the California State Parks’ PORTS program (Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students) won the prestigious Excellence in Museum Education Competition which recognizes the outstanding achievements in California museum programs that annually serve approximately 45,000 K-12 students and/or educators.
The Friends-funded Santa Cruz County “PORTS” program, which provides ranger-led live-stream video to classrooms throughout California, gives children a chance to learn about and become future stewards of State Parks and Beaches. PORTS is a free distance learning program that uses the power of interactive video conferencing to help K-12 schools teach common core state standards in the context of California State Parks.
The Distance Learning Studio at Seacliff is in its eighth year of operation. In 2011-12, 8,334 students interacted in units including: Elephant Seals Adaptations and Evolution, What is a Mammal, and a unit on monarch butterflies. PORTS helps bridge the socio-economic gap in California's educational system by providing meaningful interactions - regardless of location.
The competition is a joint project of the California Association of Museums and the Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
The Excellence in Museum Education Award recognizes the hard work, dedication, and innovation of State Parks staff who work in the PORTS programs, providing quality interpretive programs that meet the varied needs of kids in different grade levels.
Check out the great write-up from our friends at Hilltromper.com and at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
National Volunteer Week is April 9-13th!
