About

A popular spot for kiteboarding, windsurfing, fishing, beachcombing and birdwatching, Gazos Creek State Beach is located just north of Año Nuevo State Park is right off Highway 1. Often windy, this beach is a perfect short getaway from the scorching valley heat during the summer and offers pristine sunsets during the fall.

The surf at this beach can be unpredictable and beachgoers are encouraged to play in the water with caution and keep an eye out for riptides. During the off season, you can enjoy a refreshing jog on the beach and a handful of nearby hiking trails.

Gazos Creek flows into the ocean and creates a large pool behind the beach which attracts birds — a spectacle for birders and hikers alike!

During a clear sunny day, Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park can be seen to the north of this beach.

History

Gazos Creek is at the borderlands of territories between the Awaswas-speaking Ohlone tribes known as the Cotoni and the Quiroste, both of whom stewarded these lands since time immemorial. Centuries of colonial violence led to their removal and displacement. Today, there are no known survivors from either tribe. Neighboring tribes continue their stewardship and presence here to honor the Cotoni and Quiroste and ensure that they are never forgotten.
